59-1 shot up to win Finger Lakes Juvenile Fillies

EmailJovanna, shipping in off a hot maiden score at Saratoga by trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. and bet down to 1-5, took the lead in the lane in the $50,000 Finger Lakes Juvenile Fillies on Saturday. Then things got interesting.

Say Toba Sandy, a 59-1 shot, eased off the rail at the sixteenth pole and responded to rider Jose Osorio with a furious rally to reel in Jovanna and win by three-quarters of a length.

Say Toba Sandy ran the six furlongs in 1:12.64 and paid $121 to win. She combined with Jovanna for a $155.50 exacta. The $2 trifecta, with Wise Choice third, paid $2,259, and the $2 superfecta, with Play N Hooky fourth, paid $12,348,50.

Say Toba Sandy had won her only other start, against maidens here on Sept. 27. Meet-leading rider John Grabowski rode Say Toba Sandy in her maiden score, but switched off her to ride Jovanna on Saturday. Trained by Anthony Ferraro for Sanford Bacon, Say Toba Sandy is by Say Florida Sandy out of the Cat's Career mare Career Year. She had earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 37 in her maiden win, while Jovanna's debut score netted her an 87.
