3 stakes winners go at it


EDMONTON, Alberta - Friday evening's Madamoiselle here at Northlands Park will see topweighted To Dream Again seek her second stakes victory in a field of eight that includes two other stakes winners in Ice Girl and Braetta. The Madamoiselle, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares, offers a purse of $50,000.

To Dream Again, who will carry 124 pounds and be ridden by Leanne Painter, won the Sales Stakes and the Jenkins Memorial in Calgary this spring. Ice Girl won the one-mile John Patrick in her last start here July 16, with Braetta fifth.

* Halo Steven has taken another king-sized step toward the Aug. 26 Canadian Derby, the Grade 3, $300,000 race that is the highlight of the meeting. Owned by Marta Racing Ventures of Vancouver, Halo Steven heads into the 1 3/8-mile Canadian Derby after wiring his field by 2 1/4 lengths in the 1 1/16-mile Count Lathum here Sunday.

Since winning the Alberta Derby at Stampede Park, Halo Steven has acquired a new trainer in Stuart Simon and a new jockey in Stephan Heiler.

* The busy Northlands weekend also saw the 2-year-olds experience their first stakes action. Cagey Dee won Saturday's Princess Margaret wire-to-wire by three-quarters of a length over Bequia's Beauty. On Friday, 6-5 favorite Freetoleave rallied from last place to win the Edmonton Juvenile for colts and geldings.
