20 trials for Rainbow Futurity

Ruidoso Downs will run 20 trial races Thursday for the Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Quarter Horse Futurity. There will be a special first post of 11 a.m. Mountain. The 400-yard finale is set for July 19.

Paul Jones leads all trainers in starters in the trials, with 24. He will have at least one horse in each of the 20 races Thursday. Trainer Chip Woolley, who won this year's Kentucky Derby with Mine That Bird, has starters in the first and sixth races. The horses with the 10 fastest qualifying times will advance to the finale.

First Klas Fred, who won the Grade 1, $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity last month for trainer Michael Joiner, will start in race 14 on Thursday. He is the richest of the 192 juveniles that were entered in the trials.

* Jockey G.R. Carter Jr., was among those inducted into the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame during ceremonies held Saturday night. The others were 1989 All American Futurity winner Strawberry Silk, trainer Ted Wells, and owner-breeder Jerry Allred and his late brothers, Dale and Harvey.
