$170,000 filly leads session

LEXINGTON, Ky. - After posting losses at Monday's opening session, the second and final day of selling at the Barretts May juvenile auction Tuesday in Pomona, Calif., produced a $170,000 early leader.

At 5:30 p.m., the $170,000 leader was a Smokester filly that Miller Thoroughbreds bought from Mary Knight, agent. The filly is a daughter of the Afleet mare Ultrafleet.

Monday's opening-session topper was a $135,000 Gentlemen filly that Becky Thomas's Sequel Bloodstock agency sold to the Chaiken Family Trust and Fred Sahadi. The Monday session suffered a 22-percent decline in gross, dropping from $3,485,00 for 117 juveniles last year to $2,721,100 for 113 lots this season.

The Monday average also fell this year, slipping 19 percent to $24,081, and median declined 22 percent to $14,000. In the tougher selling climate, buybacks also rose from 26 percent last year to 30 percent in 2003.
