17-year-old arrested in stabbing

A 17-year-old male was arrested Tuesday in the fatal stabbing of a groom who had worked the last several weeks for trainer Ralph Nicks at Gulfstream Park, according to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Hugo Garibay, 33, was stabbed three times in the neck with a screwdriver on Tuesday, according to a Nicks employee. The killing occurred sometime between 3 and 6 a.m. in the dormitory complex adjacent to the Gulfstream stable gate. Garibay's body was found by another Nicks employee who was looking for him to come to work.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld by police because of his age, confessed to police Tuesday after being spotted and identified by employees at Calder Race Course, about 10 miles west of Gulfstream, according to the report. It was not known whether the suspect worked at either track.

Garibay, a native of Mexico, was very quiet and went about his work in a professional manner, according to Nicks's staff.
