$1 million up for grabs


The $1 million-estimated Texas Classic Futurity, which is the richest race in Texas, will highlight a 27-race, $2.6 million stakes schedule for Quarter Horses this fall at Lone Star Park. The track will open a 32-night meet on Oct. 5. The season will run through Dec. 1.

The Texas Classic Futurity, a Grade 1 for 2-year-olds at 400 yards, is to be held Dec. 1. Trials for the race will be run on Nov. 17. The Texas Classic Futurity is one of five Gradeo1 stakes on the calendar at Lone Star. The Grade 1, $450,000-estimated Dash for Cash Futurity is the meet's other major offering for 2-year-olds. It will be run on Oct. 27.

As for older horses, they will have the opportunity to earn a berth into the Grade 1, $1 million Champions of Champions at Los Alamitos with a victory in the Grade 1 Refrigerator Handicap at Lone Star. To be run on Oct. 6, the Refrigerator is a 440-yard race for 3-year-olds and up. The Champion of Champions is to be held Dec. 15.

Other races of note on the calendar at Lone Star include the Grade 1, $400,000 Texas Classic Derby on Dec.o1, and the $175,000 Dash for Cash Derby on Oct. 27.

Lone Star will race on a Wednesday through Saturday night basis. During the meet, there will be a handful of stakes for Arabians.
