| Music Note |
On a day when a transformer fire took out most of the power in the Belmont Park grandstand, Music Note put some electricity back into the historic facility with a dominant 11-length romp in the Grade 1, $300,000 Coaching Club American Oaks. The victory was the fourth straight for Music Note, a streak that began last Nov. 1 and includes last month's Grade 1 Mother Goose in which she defeated Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell.
Barring a surprise victory by ex-star Lava Man, a good horse will win the first Grade 1 of his career Sunday in $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar.
Rick Violette's enthusiasm for running Market Psychology in Sunday's $100,000 Evan Shipman Stakes increased significantly when he was informed that Stormin Normandy was not entered in the 1 1/16-mile race for New York-breds.
Well Armed led throughout Saturday's $300,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, winning his first start since finishing third in the $6 million Dubai World Cup in March.
As the field went around the final turn of the Grade 2, $750,000 Virginia Derby on Saturday at Colonial Downs, Gio Ponti was caught three wide, but it was exactly where jockey Garrett Gomez wanted to be. A slow pace left the field bunched, and Gomez and Gio Ponti were in the clear, with Court Vision trapped inside them and behind the leaders.
Ocean Colors will seek to become the first stakes winner out of the champion mare Winning Colors when the 2-year-old filly heads a field of 11 entered in Wednesday's Grade 3, $100,000 Schuylerville Stakes, the opening-day feature at Saratoga.
The distinction of setting a track record at Del Mar this summer will be a fleeting sensation. They don't seem to have much shelf life during the first few days of the meeting. After a 2007 meeting of slow times on the Polytrack, the track is playing quicker this year. Already in the first three days of the meeting, the record for 5 1/2 furlongs has been lowered twice.
Evening Attire, the ageless wonder, pulled away to an 8 1/4-length win Saturday in the $250,000 Greenwood Cup at 1 1/2 miles. The 10-year-old gray gelding scored his first win in 11 races outside New York and moved within a whisker of $3 million in purse earnings. More importantly, Evening Attire secured a trip to the Breeders' Cup.
