Claiming vs Allowance Races
Claiming races are the most common of all races, stipulating a price for which any horse in the race may be purchased (“claimed”) prior to the running of the race. When the starting gate opens, a claimed horse becomes the property of the new owner, although any purse money earning in that race goes to the previous owner. Different claiming levels provide a point of reference to different class levels. Allowance races have conditions of eligibility which are very similar, except that the horses are not for sale.
What is a “Shake”?
When there is more than one claim entered on a horse, a “shake” is used to determine who claims the horse. Numbered pills, representing the total number of entered claims for the horse, are assembled, shaken, and randomly drawn to select the winner.
What is the McFadden Memorial Sprint Claming Series?
The first leg of this three race contest featured two races on November 2nd. Both were $2,500 claiming races going five furlongs. The second leg will take place on Wednesday November 16th. Runners will be not only vying for the purse money at stake, but looking to finalize their spot in the $26,900 final on Wednesday December 7th. Horses must compete in both the first two legs of the series to advance to the finals, with a point system being used to determine which 12 horses will get into the final field.
