Saturday is the running of the Illinois Festival of Racing at Hawthorne. State-breds will be featured in six, $100,000 stakes events that will help determine the Illinois Champions for 2010. With the great racing, the final four races on the Saturday card will provide for an All Stakes Pick 4 to close out the day.

Hawthorne – Race 7 - Illini Princess Handicap – 3yo & up, fillies and mares – 1 1/16 Miles

One of the most evenly matched races on our Illinois Festival card kicks off the all stakes Pick 4 as 10 females have entered in the Illini Princess Handicap. Trainer Chris Block has a pair entered in Apple Martini and Dundalk Dust, each of which have had some stakes success this year. Trainer Mickey Goldfine’s Souper Miss was a strong winner against similar runners this spring at Hawthorne and she may be sitting on a perfect stalking trip.

Hawthorne – Race 8 - Sun Power Stakes – 2yo colts and geldings – 6 Furlongs This year’s edition of the Sun Power may be the most competitive in years as 10 male two-year-olds line up to battle. Trainer Wayne Catalano has a pair of solid youngsters in Ghetto Cat and Uncle Wayne, each of which have had impressive maiden scores and solid allowance showings. Their main competition looks to come from Hydro Power and Luck With a Kiss. Look for Uncle Wayne to have the upper hand in the end with Shane Sellers in to ride.

Hawthorne – Race 9 - Lightning Jet Handicap – 3yo & up – 6 Furlongs Sprinters contest the Lightning Jet Handicap with 12 runners set to battle. With the injury of the speedy Shrew Operator, the door has been opened for some others to contest the pace, but favored Wildwydsouternboy will be looking to run them all down in the lane. A horse for the course is Big Looie as conventional dirt looks to be where he belongs. With Shrewd Operator out, this year may be Mighty Rule’s year as he looks to repeat his victory from 2009. Look for him on the front end on Saturday.

Hawthorne – Race 10 – Buck’s Boy Handicap – 3yo & up – 1 1/16 A field of 11 has been entered in the Buck’s Boy with crossover entrant Big Looie entered here and in the Lightning Jet. Expect him to run in the sprint. Racing Bran has had a fine year and should get back on track in the Buck’s Boy. His stalking style will keep him close and he should be able to relax in a race where the pace shouldn’t be overly fast.
