Barretts October Yearling Sale

Day 1 wrap: Two bring $100,000 during Tuesday session

Led by two colts purchased for $100,000, Tuesday evening’s opening session of the Barretts October yearling sale in Pomona, Calif., showed hefty gains over the similar session in 2010.

Overall, 55 horses were sold for $1,493,000, an average of $27,145. The average increased 47 percent over the 2010 session, which saw 57 horses sell for $1,051,500, an average of $18,447. The median price on Tuesday was $20,000, compared to $10,000 in 2010. Read more | Full Day 1 results »

Sale preview: California-bred yearlings more attractive to buyers

A massive boost to stakes purses for California-breds in 2012 is likely to contribute to higher interest in statebred yearlings at this week’s Barretts October yearling sale at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif. The two-day sale begins on Tuesday with an evening session at 7 p.m., and continues Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. There are 253 yearlings in the sale, predominantly California-breds.

Earlier this month, the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association announced the formation of the 2012 Golden State Series of 18 races at Golden Gate Fields and in Southern California worth $3.6 million. Read more »
