Horses to Watch
The Horses to Watch feature from DRF Simulcast Daily will be posted every Thursday during the Del Mar meet.
Wild Baby Girl
Trainer: David Hofmans
Last race: Del Mar, Aug 15, 2nd
Finish: 1st by 1/2
Juvenile filly won debut despite breaking slow, racing greenly and failing to switch leads in the stretch. Claimed from Hofmans by trainer Barry Abrams, should improve with experience.
Mellow Cammie
Trainer: Jeff Mullins
Last race: Del Mar, Aug 15, 1st
Finish: 4th by 5-1/4
This late-running sprinter wants no part of two turns, so his midpack finish in a maiden-40 starter route can be forgiven. Likely to cut back to a sprint next time, and fits vs. similar with pace to run at.
Tasha's Miracle
Trainer: John Sadler
Last race: Del Mar, Aug 08, 7th
Finish: 1st by 3-1/4
This improving daughter of Harlan's Holiday stamped herself as leader of the 2-year-old filly division with authoritative, perfect-trip smasher in Sorrento Stakes. Acts like she will run farther; the one to beat Sept. 3 in Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante as long as she draws outside.
Scibelli
Trainer: Robert Hess, Jr.
Last race: Del Mar, Aug 11, 6th
Finish: 2nd by Head
This 2-year-old first-time raced wide and finished evenly through the lane, while more than four lengths clear of third. Son of Orientate has much potential, and should win next out at six and one-half furlongs or more.
Spoils of Excess
Trainer: William Spawr
Last race: Del Mar, Aug 10, 6th
Finish: 2nd by 2
Closing sprinter was compromised by tentative ride into the turn when he steadied, lost momentum, and re-rallied too late. With the turf rails down next time, he can make amends in a first-level Calbred allowance.
Placid Lake
Trainer: Vladimir Cerin
Last race: Del Mar, Aug 08, 6th
Finish: 2nd by 2
This filly was a mile best in maiden-40 starter allownace. Got buried in traffic on turn, angled six-wide into lane, finished well but had too much to do. Should win this condition next time with a clean trip.
Talkin to Mom Roo
Trainer: Brian Koriner
Last race: Del Mar, Jul 30, 7th
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
This turf sprinter was shuffled and lost position early in first-level allowance, then finished well but came up short to front-running winner. It was his first start in five months, fits next time vs. similar, either surface.
Informed
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: Del Mar, Aug 04, 4th
Finish: 2nd by 3-1/4
This colt is bred to run long (by Tiznow), and ran well to finish second in fast sprint race. One to follow as distances get longer.
Lucky J. H.
Trainer: Carla Gaines
Last race: Del Mar, Aug 03, 7th
Finish: 3rd by 2-1/4
This comebacker was gunned to the lead in turf route, set a fast pace while racing for the first time in a year, and tired. Graded stakes-winner needed the start, and can only move forward next time out.
Mezuzah
Trainer: Robert Frankel
Last race: Del Mar, Aug 01, 8th
Finish: 6th by 3-1/2
Comeback filly had been off a year, and was blocked final five-sixteenths of turf route. She was never set down, finished on her own, and should make amends next time out in turf route with the rails down.
