PALOMAR BC HANDICAP, Saturday, Sept. 4
Notting Hill can steal Palomar
By NOEL MICHAELS
Saturday's Grade 2 $200,000 Palomar Breeders' Cup kicks off Labor Day weekend at Del Mar as the meet heads toward closing day and the running of the Del Mar Futurity on Wednesday, Sept. 8. The Palomar features a wide-open field of eight fillies and mares (seven betting interests) going 1 1/16th miles on the lawn, and Notting Hill looks like a threat to jump out to the lead and never look back. Enjoy the holiday weekend at Del Mar.
Palomar BC Handicap - G2
Del Mar - Race 7
1 1/16 miles turf, purse: $200,000
1) 5-Notting Hill
2) 1A-Intercontinental
3) 7-Fun House
Notting Hill ran perhaps the best race of her career in defeat last time out when third behind the likes of Musical Chimes and Moscow Burning in the Grade 1 Mabee Handicap at Del Mar. Notting Hill finds a slightly softer spot in this race and has a better chance to try to steal this wire-to-wire on another uncontested lead, just the way Star Over the Bay did in last weekend's Del Mar Handicap. Notting Hill is the best speed in the race, she's in her best career form, and looks like a smart play at solid odds in this wide open race.
Intercontinental disappointed last time out in the Grade 1 Diana Handicap at Saratoga where she may not have liked the yielding course. However, she had been undefeated in three prior U.S. starts on firm turf, including a win over Ocean Drive in the Jenny Wiley at Keeneland and a win over Etoile Montante with a 103 Beyer figure in the Just a Game-G2 at Belmont. Intercontinental also owns a win in Southern California earlier this year and should once again benefit from a firm turf course in this race. If Frankel sends entry-mate Etoile Montante to harass Notting Hill on the lead, things could set up for this part of the entry.
Fun House owns the speed to run with Notting Hill early if she chooses, but she is more likely to sit just off the pace based on her recent races including a win over Katdogawn in the Buena Vista Handicap back at Santa Anita. Fun House has been freshened up for this effort, and gets returning jockey Gary Stevens in the irons for this outing. Should be a good price.
