WISE DAN was supposed to win the Firecracker Handicap last weekend at Churchill Downs.
Heck, the reigning Horse of the Year was 1-5 against inferior competition but he certainly showed his class by overcoming a bit of adversity.
Burdened with 128 pounds (giving a spread of 11-13 lbs. to his four opponents) over a yielding turf course, Wise Dan was bottled up along the inside turning for home and attempted to barrel through a narrow opening. Corey Lanerie, aboard eventual third-place finisher SERUNI, put the squeeze on John Velazquez and Wise Dan, but the champ wouldn't be stopped. He drove by Seruni in quick fashion to win by two lengths with a 101 Beyer Speed Figure.
Some critics have panned Wise Dan's undefeated 2013 campaign. They feel he should be taking on tougher competition at longer distances, preferably on dirt, and there are sure to be more howls of indignation if trainer Charles LoPresti sends Wise Dan to the Grade 2 Fourstardave Stakes on turf at Saratoga on August 10.
Realistically, it's hard to knock a horse that's already won two Grade 1 races this season while giving weight in all three of his starts. Perhaps LoPresti will run Wise Dan in the Grade 1 Whitney on dirt on August 3 and there is also the possibility of a try in the Grade 1 Woodward on August 31. While Wise Dan is good on synthetic, turf and dirt, he may be a bit better on the grass. Whichever direction LoPresti decides to take, I'm sure Wise Dan will get his test before the year is out. He's a very good horse.

There is a horse on the California circuit named Bud I Crushed It. I've been following him for about a year and when they run him where he belongs he seems to win and he's always about 20-1 (which makes me very happy) . Could you post his PPs?
The lifetime past performances for Bud I Crushed It are available at the bottom of this blog post.
The weekend handicapping videos should be up on the homepage later this week.
I'll be taking a bit of time off and should see you again opening week at Saratoga.
Best of luck at the races!

Congrats to Curtis V. Slewster for finishing first in last week's HandiGambling exercise.
Rick M's scoresheet is available at the bottom of this blog post.
Curt selected Friday's seventh race at Ellis Park for this week's contest.
PAST PERFORMANCES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG POST.
Remember that you have a mythical $100 with which to wager on the race, and the entrant with the highest money total will receive a "Monthly Enhanced 60-Card Past Performance Plan."
Anyone going over the $100 limit will be disqualified.
Please post your plays and analysis to the blog.
PLEASE GIVE YOUR NAME OR BLOG MONIKER AT THE END OF THE HG PLAY AND/OR ANALYSIS.
Please separate the play from the analysis and label the play "HG" with the program numbers (instead of the horse's name) for easier scoring.
In the event of a tie, the earliest post gets first preference. One entry per person please.
I reserve the right to approve or deny any entries.
I know that there is a time issue for some of you, but let's remember why we began the HandiGambling races in the first place. The goal was to share ideas on why we like these horses, and why we're betting them the way we are. I'm not asking for a novel, but if you could spare a sentence or two outlining your handicapping angles, and thought processes about wagering, it would be appreciated.
***FROM SCOREKEEPER PENN NATIONAL RICK***
I read some entries on here and there are some people who put their heart out on their picks(such as DavidM9999) and give you great analysis on who they like and why and then there are others who elect not to give any reasoning behind their entries. The rule I will implement EFFECTIVE 3/1/13 will be... any entry without ANY analysis will be ignored. We are not asking you to put out a novel, but again a sentence or two. Also, I will put communication out when Dan puts out new blogs.
My intent is not to be jerk on this, but what's fair is fair. I'm not taking away from this week or past winners regarding all of this, but we do need to make the change.
If you have any questions/concerns...please send an email to FORMBLOG@DRF.COM and it will get forwarded to me.
REMEMBER, IF YOU ARE DECLARED THE WINNER OF THE HANDIGAMBLING EXERCISE; PLEASE CONTACT FORMBLOG@DRF.COM WITH YOUR DRF LOGIN AND PASSWORD IN ORDER TO ACCESS YOUR PRIZE PACKAGE.
ALSO, IF THE WINNER WOULD LIKE TO SELECT THE FOLLOWING WEEK'S RACE, PLEASE CONTACT FORMBLOG@DRF.COM NO LATE THAN THE FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY MORNING (A FRIDAY RACE IS MOST IDEAL).
Best of luck to all.

Rodney There has been plenty of speculation as to WHAT will become of the premier races at Hollywood Park, and their racing announcer, too. Here are a few past links from DRF over the last few months, on the history of HP and what may come ... http://www.drf.com/blogs/vain http://www.drf.com/news/hollywood-park-will-close-end-year http://www.drf.com/news/jay-hovdey-hollywood-oaks-rich-history-ends-its-run http://www.drf.com/news/jay-hovdey-denmans-days-leisure-casualty-hollywood-closure SR Vegas ...we will see :)
3 cats , aka Mike from Michigan , & Eddie, Lewis and Buster :) ...meow ! A name horse? I'm sure there will be some "fun" names one will remember and post here .. Bodacious Tatas , anyone ?. Okay, I'll start. Since I came on board just a few years ago and have not had 20-30 years of horse racing history behind me, that my many formblog friends have seen... here's my .02 cents. #1 ZENYATTA... I first got the name ' thing because I was a huge Police fan , and my first thought was Zenyatta Mondatta... LOVED that album and all the songs that were big hits in the 80's .It was when Uncle Steve said ' watch her' and her debut was on my B-Day weekend ... That I followed her career and found out that A & M records Jerry Moss was her owner and named her after this album and friend STING. ( he also had Ky Derby winner , Giacamo, named after Stings son ) But, it is a story I truly enjoy telling to those who don't know. That her career had us all gasping as to ...'will she come from behind and do it again? " can she win ? ..It's a moment that I believe transfixed a neutral racing fan , and mesmerized even non 'racing' fans to follow her. She became the peoples horse in the last few years, before her retirement. Can't say I've ever seen that in my short racing experience. Such an achievement, can be attributed to that small crooked pony named Seabiscut, during his own time and place and who had a national following , or Secretariat during those glory years. Just my opinion :) Besides, I'm a bit biased because I have a picture of Zenyatta up close. Thank you Uncle Steve :) #2 RACHEL ALEXANDRA A great filly , who I also have my picture with ( Thanks TBTA) who did the most against the boys in her career. At the time, enough said. Not a stellar following year, but I hope she has some nice babies in being a Mom. I can't put her in the same category as RUFFIAN, though I never saw her race, she was a beast based on her charts. CIGAR A huge winner at many levels, here and abroad ! Just the name points to a strong influence, whether social or a smoking type and just conjures up a certain class or vision to me. It's simple. Me, I'm not a smoking type...but I have many friends that enjoy that smokey pleasure :) #4 JOHN HENRY An Iron Horse and quite the character, It was in my early racing years as a neophyte that HE caught my attention and made me take notice of racing . Add in the recent couple of years of the fillies and mares of late, as I noted - ...Goldigova, Zenyatta, Rachel Alexandra, Zarkava, Black Caviar .. we have been very lucky to see such talent in a short period of time.. Good for racing fans . and I will add a few very popular and talented UK horses too . GOLDIKOVA - 3 time BC mile winner & multiple grade 1 winner .! FRANKEL - .a remarkable horse named after a remarkable trainer. Who can't love that angle and appreciate his race record of 14 for 14 ..perfection.. BLACK CAVIAR .. Though I don't like fish eggs, I DO love her as a premier sprint specialist and can't dismiss a 25 for 25 record.. ...and I'll even throw in PEPPERS PRIDE , for what she has done for her own local achievements and New Mexico Pride being 19 for 19 in her own time. I guess when it comes to our favorites in horse racing, it's akin to wine, ...it's very subjective as to what one likes best. Haven't seen our Curt V Slewster. lately ( where are you ?) ..but I'm sure he will nominate his Seattle Slew as his pick. Mike from Michigan , I'm sure you will get a lot of responses to you inquiry :) SR Vegas

Annie, Think BIG. McDonalds and the Breeder Cup started small and look at them now. David M9999 You must not read the Chicago papers. One said it was Dewey by a nose. Hold all tickets. stuckinarizona
hi Everybody, I'm bbaaccckkk!! At least at the moment. I've missed reading/writing at the blog. It seems I rarely have time for anything other than research, writing, more research, etc.. David M, thanks for the kind words regarding the Del Mar articles. I opened up Steve T.'s stats from last year and created articles from the info. I'm headed to Chicago for a Thong Reunion with TBTA and SR Vegas Friday - Sunday (7/26 - 7/28). I'd love to meet formbloggers who go to Arlington (and borrow some bail $$$, lol). If anyone has experience creating databases with coma delineated files and would like to help Steve T and I on a project, please contact me. We'll give ya free access to the into and possibly be able to pay you for your time. email: email@example.com
Ron; Send me an email ( firstname.lastname@example.org ) I will help you with some trainer statistic stuff. vs

Annie Or who else knows.. Are any graded stakes from Hollywood going to be to be transferred to another track? Or that it finished for good? Quite a few historic grade 1 races run there.
Whackymacky When you get your picture with Chantal , we will have to share ! I have mine :) SR Vegas
Stuckinarizona, Um, you don't think I have enough work to do for the MKB? :) Annie
