Tampa Bay: Homeister goes 5-for-6

Email

Rosemary Homeister Jr. won with 5 of her 6 mounts on the 10-race Friday card on what was a sensational afternoon for the 38-year-old jockey.

Homeister started by winning Race 2 with Daddy's Honor ($3.20), then was out of the money in Race 4 aboard Hudson Bay. She then reeled off 4 in a row, with Fire Cloud ($15) in the fifth, Round Trip Loner ($6.20) in the sixth, Mr. Ryder ($10) in the seventh, and He's Appealing ($24.40) in the eighth. She had no mount in the last two races of the day.

With more than 2,400 career wins, Homeister is the second all-time leading female jockey in history, trailing only Julie Krone in that category. In 2003 she became just the female jockey to ride in the Kentucky Derby when 13th aboard Supah Blitz. She has ridden primarily in the East, although she did compete with quite a bit of success last fall at Keeneland and Churchill Downs.

Incidentally, the win by He's Appealing for trainer Peggy McVey launched some monstrous mutuel payoffs, as Mount Skylight (#8) was second at 36-1, followed by Take It Home Don (#1) at 63-1 and Red Ranger (#10) at 115-1. The $2 tri returned $7,774, and only two 10-cent superfectas were sold on the winning combination, with each paying $20,350.
