Seymourdini ready for bigger and better

Email
SEYMOURDINI walloped a field of optional claimers at Laurel last week and appears ready to return to stakes competition for trainer Linda Rice.

The 4-year-old appeared to brush the side of the gate at the start of the one-turn mile test, but recovered quickly and wound up on top as the 6 to 5 favorite under Horatio Karamanos. Seymourdini set fractions of 24.09 and 47.00 while facing only token outside pressure from eventual third-place finisher ANY COURT INASTORM.

Seymourdini began his sprint for home midway on the far turn, opened up at will and drew off to score by 12 1/4 lengths. He ran his final two furlongs in 23.70 and polished off the last eighth in 12 flat. Seymourdini received a career-best 101 Beyer Speed Figure for his 1:34.94 clocking, a time that was only two-fifths of a second off the track record.

A 4-year-old son of Bernardini, Seymourdini was a $290,000 RNA as a yearling before selling for a whopping $900,000 at the OBS April juvenile auction. His dam, Graeme Six (by Graeme Hall), captured the Grade 3 Winning Colors Stakes traveling 6 furlongs at Churchill Downs. Graeme Six has also foaled Cali Star (by Street Cry), the winner of the Grade 3 Rampart Stakes over a one-turn mile at Gulfstream Park, and DELIGHTFUL JOY (by Tapit), who grabbed the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks at 1 1/16 miles.

Seymourdini showed promise before his career debut at two. Here's what the "DRF Clocker Report" thought of a couple of his pre-debut workouts:

Aug 29 SAR 6f fst 1:13.55
Broke at the half-mile pole, went solo to the wire in 49.14 then really picked up the pace into and around the turn, completing 5/8's in 1:01.39, six furlongs under some mild encouragement in 1:13.47, up in 1:26.77. RATING: B+

Aug 8 SAR 5f fst 1:00.20
Much the best of a team with the older Four Directions, went five furlongs from the half-mile pole in 1:00.28 finiished a head best while under wraps at the end, galloped out well clear in 1:13.12, up in 1:26.60 with Ortiz up. RATING: B+

Seymourdini ran very well to be second to future graded stakes winner MOHAYMEN in that September 19 heat, and then placed second again over a muddy strip the following month.

Stretching out to a mile at Aqueduct on November 22, Seymourdini closed out his 2-year-old campaign with an authoritative nine-length victory.

"He broke his maiden pretty impressively but then he was showing signs of stress,” Rice told David Grening in a DRF story published on March 4, 2016. "He backed off his feed, wasn’t eating as well as we wanted him to so we sent him out. He’s a May foal and I thought the time would help him.”

Seymourdini beat a decent field off a layoff in his 3-year-old bow, but was cooked on a fast pace in his next start, the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes on the Belmont Stakes undercard. Away for over six months, Seymourdini came back in an 'n2x' going two turns at Parx on December 13. He broke through the gate before the start, was involved in pace warfare for six furlongs and packed it in late. It is likely he needed the race badly.

If Rice can keep Seymourdini together, he might be able to make hay against stakes competition at distances ranging from 7 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles.

Let's go with Saturday's Florida Derby from Gulfstream Park as this week's exercise.

PAST PERFORMANCES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS BLOG POST.

SR Vegas and Rick M. have graciously decided to update all of the HG rules in order to make them an easier read for everyone...

HANDIGAMBLING version 2016:

Let's remember WHY we began the HandiGambling races in the first place.
The goal was to share ideas on why we like these horses and why we're betting them the way we are. We are not asking for a novel but SPARE A SENTENCE OR TWO outlining your HANDICAPPING ANGLES and/or THOUGHT PROCESSES about WAGERING.

1. Start your post with HG or HANDIGAMBLING to find your entry in a thread.
2. You have a mythical $100 to wager in whatever format you choose that is available for that HG race. Anyone going over the $100 limit will be DISQUALIFIED.
3. Post your WAGER and ANALYSIS to the blog prior to the start of the designated race. SIGN OFF WITH YOUR NAME/OR MONIKER AT THE END OF YOUR POST. Remember that posts may start as 'anonymous' or an 'alternate name'. You MUST SIGN YOURSELF AT THE END (even if it is the same) This enables the scorekeeper to identify who you are.
4. (1) ONE ENTRY per person for the Handigambling contest. If you have multiple email addresses, use just ONE for contest purposes. Multiple entries will be cause for disqualification.
5. Separate your analysis from the wager and use the PROGRAM # in your wager. Just like you would do in a real wager. No horse names.
6. If any of the rules listed above aren't met, the wager is subject to review which can lead to disqualification of your entry.

In the event of a tie, the earliest post gets first preference. Dan reserves the right to approve or deny any entries.
The winner will receive a "60-Card Quarterly Formulator Past Performance Plan"

As an example :

HG 2016
The speed in this race are #1 Alpha, #2 Beta, and #8 Ocho. I like the works for layoff horse #5 Cinco who can sit off the pace. Lots of speed in here, so this could set up for a closer like  #6 Six Flags and I like the trainer's stats in these conditions. I’ll put the closer over the speed.

HG wager:
$10 EX   6 /   1,2,5, 8  = $40
$5 TRI   6 /   1,2,5,8  /  1,2,5,8  =  $60
Total $100
Thanks Dan!
Harpo
