Saratoga: Persistently runs down Rachel Alexandra in Personal Ensign

Email

Persistently (10th, $45.00), a Phipps Stable homebred, ran down 2-5 favorite Rachel Alexandra in deep stretch to win the Grade 1 Personal Ensign by a length under Alan Garcia.

Rachel Alexandra set fractions of 23.66, 47.73 and 1:12.02 under pressure from 9-5 second choice Life At Ten, put that rival away turning for home after a mile in 1:37.54 and opened a clear lead, but couldn't stave off Persistently, who completed the 1 1/4 miles in 2:04.49 on a fast main track.

It was 10 1/4 lengths back to Life At Ten in third, and another 5 1/4 lengths to Miss Singhsix. Classofsixtythree completed the order of finish.

Persistently, the runner-up in the Matron and Frizette as a 2-year-old in 2008, was coming off a second-level allowance win on July 30 for trainer Shug McGaughey, who trained Personal Ensign through an undefeated career in the late 1980s for the Phipps family.
