Email

There was some buzz in the press box when Exley, a 2-year-old second time starter went from 8-5 to even-money in the last flash before the gates opened. An inquiry to Pat Mahony, senior vice president of pari-mutuel operations, yielded the following: The money in the win pool from Las Vegas hub was $4,900 when Exley was 8-5. That money ballooned to over $31,000 when the horse went to even-money.

Mahony believes that $25,000 win-bet was made on Exley from the Vegas hub. Exley battled gamely on the lead, but was not game enough as he faded to third in the final sixteenth. Private Rules won the race, returning $19.60.
