Saratoga: Giant Surprise wins; vanned off

Giant Surprise, a 2-year-old first-time starter by Giant's Causeway, won a good-looking debut by 4 1-4 lengths in Saturday's second race, running six furlongs in 1:10.23. But he didn't make it back to the winner's circle to get his picture taken.

According to owner Mike Repole, jockey John Velazquez said the horse felt ``a little ouchy'' pulling up and he didn't want to gallop him the half-mile back to the winner's circle. Giant Surprise was easily walked onto the equine amublance and transported to trainer Todd Pletcher's barn to be evaluated. The issue appears to involve the colt's left foreleg.

``Johnny did the right thing,'' Repole said. ``Todd said he walked onto the van no problem and walked off the van no problem. We'll see.''

Giant Surprise, breaking from the rail, led every step of the way, outdueling  the Steve Asmussen-trained Officer Prado.

Stealcase, the 8-5 favorite finished fourth.
