SARATOGA: DQ to start the day

Email

As if the rain, wet conditions and all the late scratches weren't enough, the stewards jump in with a bit of a head scratching disqualification in the opener, taking down Laylaben from first and placing her third for allegedly interfering with Under the Rainbow in the vicinity of the sixteenth pole. While Laylaben did drift out, she appeared clear of Under the Rainbow at the time and frankly there have been much worse incidents  let go during the course of the meet.   The stewards even erred in their published explanation of the incident, reporting it happened near the eighth pole not the sixteenth pole. The ruling made a  somewhat undserving winner of A Smart Judge and jockey Garrett Gomez.
