Saratoga: Desormeaux has broken vertebrae

Email

Upon further review, Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux did not come out of his spill in Friday's second race okay.

After one doctor told Desormeaux X-rays were negative, a second doctor at Saratoga Hospital diagnosed Desormeaux with a broken C-7 vertebrae. (Saratoga Hospital, is after all, the place where practice makes perfect.)

According to his agent, Mike Sellitto, Desormeaux was fitted with a cervical collar and was on his way early Friday evening to Albany Medical Center where he was to get a third opinion.

Desormeaux was aboard Forest Whip, the 3-2 favoriote in the second race, who suffered a heart attack in mid-stretch, and hurled Desormeaux to the ground.
