Santa Anita: Worrrisome trends

The Wednesday through Friday programs at Santa Anita this week feature 24 races, and only one of them has drawn a double-digit field: Wednesday's second race for 2-year-old maidens over two furlongs has 12 entrants, and will be limited to 10 starters.

Thursday's eight-race program is particularly disappointing, with only 54 entrants. There are 61 horses entered on Friday's eight-race program, and 62 horses entered on Wednesday. The number of starters is likely to fall further after scratches.

Unfortunately, such a trend is likely to be commonplace in coming months. There are plenty of vacancies in the Hollywood Park and Santa Anita barn areas, particularly at Hollywood Park where the spring-summer meeting begins on April 21.
