Santa Anita: What a meet for Bob

Email

Hall of Famer Bob Baffert is the leading trainer at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting and greatly added to that status on Saturday, winning the $1 million Santa Anita Derby in a 13-1 upset with Midnight Interlude and two other races earlier on the card.

Midnight Interlude was only a maiden race winner going into the Santa Anita Derby and was added to the field by Baffert on Monday after he said he was impressed with the colt's six-furlong workout in 1:10.60 that day. "He grew up in a hurry," Baffert said in the winner's circle of Midnight Interlude.

Midnight Interlude caught a game pacesetter in Comma to the Top to win by a head, with Mr. Commons finishing third in his stakes debut. Silver Medallion, the 5-2 favorite, could only finish fourth.

Baffert's three winners on Saturday and all have promising futures. He won a six-furlong maiden race with Flightofalifetime in the second race, and won an allowance race with First Dude, who was second in the Preakness Stakes last year.
