Santa Anita: Well done, Garrett

Jockey Garrett Gomez rode Asperity to a tight victory in a one-mile turf for $28,000 to $32,000 claimers in Thursday's fifth race, emerging behind a wall of horses at the eighth pole to win by a head over Lease of Life. Kris Silver finished third, a neck behind Lease of Life.

Gomez timed the rally perfectly, reaching the front with a stride to spare.

Asperity ($5.60) ran a mile on turf in 1:35.27, scoring his second consecutive win since being transferred from trainer Neil Drysdale to John Sadler in the fall.

The race was not without drama. In the first furlong, Concerto's Thunder, a 6-1 shot ridden by Rafael Bejarano, appeared to drift out and into the path of 42-1 Woodland Flood, who stumbled severely under jockey Victor Espinoza, who was fortunate to maintain his balance. The stewards conducted an inquiry into the incident. Concerto's Thunder finished sixth and was placed last. The first four placings were not changed.
