Santa Anita: Weight takes a toll

Separate Forest held off a late run from Unzip Me to win the $100,000 Las Cienegas Handicap in Saturday's third race, but the nine-pound spread between the horses had to take a toll.

Unzip Me, carrying 127 pounds, nearly made up two lengths on pacesetter Separate Forest, but her rally fell short by a head. Unzip Me had won two sprint stakes on the hillside turf course earlier at this meeting. The 127-pound assignment was the highest of Unzip Me's career, and two pounds more than what she carried to victory in the Clocker's Corner Handicap on March 5.

Separate Forest, by Forestry out of Separata, was claimed for $25,000 in January. Separata was second in the 2001 Las Cienegas Handicap and won the Mamzelle Stakes at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby week that year. Separate Forest is a half-brother to Indiano, who was second in the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park last weekend.
