Santa Anita: Valenzuela doubles

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela won his second race on Sunday in the fourth race, opening the pick six sequence with a smart ride on second choice Van Brit ($6.40).

Van Brit stalked the pace on the backstretch before Valenzuela guided the 6-year-old mare to the outside on the turn of the one-mile turf race. With a wide move, Van Brit challenged pacesetter Samba School in early stretch and won the $40,000 claimer by three-quarters of a length over Samba School, the 6-5 favorite. Van Brit was timed in 1:36.34 on a course rated good after rain on Friday and Saturday.

Van Brit won the first leg of a pick six that drew a strong pool of $236,434. Through the fourth race, Valenzuela ranked third in the jockey standings with 36 wins, trailing leader Rafael Bejarano by 19 races.

Samba School was claimed for $40,000 by Mike Mitchell in a three-way shake, who lost the mare in a $32,000 claimer here on Feb. 5. Samba School has been first or second in six of her last seven starts.
