Santa Anita: Upset in 6th

Lukimbi, unraced since June, 2009, pulled an upset in Friday's sixth race, stalking the pace before taking the lead in the stretch.

Lukimbi ran 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:14.75, winning by 1 3-4 lengths over 3-1 Short Memo. Eddie Set Go, a 14-1 shot, finished third, with Lichtenstein, the 2-1 favorite, finishing fifth after never threatening the winner after a wide trip.

Lukimbi ($32.20) was ridden by David Flores and was the first double-digit winner in Friday's pick six sequence, which began with a carryover of $68,093. Bettors added $416,511 to the pool on Friday.

The first three winners of the pick six races were Lunch Time Diva ($6), Drink At Buster's ($4.60), and Absolutlypositivly ($9.80).

Friday, Lukimbi, a 6-year-old gelding, was making his first appearance for a claiming price in the sprint for $25,000 claimers who had not won twice. In six starts in 2008 and 2009, he made one appearance in a stakes, finishing fourth behind Slew's Tiznow in the El Cajon Stakes at Del Mar.

There were two claims in the race. Short Memo was taken by Robertino Diodoro. Lichtenstein was claimed in a two-way shake by Doug O'Neill.
