Santa Anita: An unlucky Crisis

Crisis of Spirit was an unlucky third in Thursday's seventh race, stuck in traffic at a pivotal point in early stretch of an optional claimer over six furlongs and eventually losing by a little more than three-quarters of a length to stablemate Salty Sarah.

Jockey Mike Smith had Crisis of Spirit behind horses turning for home, but did not have a clear path until near the sixteenth pole, giving the mare too much to do in deep stretch. Crisis of Spirit closed well late but could not catch Salty Sarah ($10.20). Church Camp finished second, a head in front of Crisis of Spirit, the 6-5 favorite.

Salty Sarah, trained by Bob Baffert, was claimed for $12,500 at Hollywood Park in October and has sonce won 3 of 4 starts. She earned $46,020 for Live Your Dream Racing Stable for Thursday's win.
