Santa Anita: Uncle Sam wins debut

Email

Uncle Sam, a first-time starter trained by Bob Baffert, won his debut in Monday's first race for 2-year-old maidens.

Uncle Sam ($5.40) finished 2 3-4 lengths in front of Special Kid in the field of nine. The race was originally scheduled for turf but was switched to the main track because of rain earlier this week.

Uncle Sam was timed in 1:36.25. Owned by Kaleem Shah, Uncle Sam is a Tapit colt purchased for $210,000 as a yearling at Keeneland in September 2009.

The colt is the second Baffert-trained maiden race winner in as many days. Sunday, The Factor zipped six furlong in track record time of 1:06.98.
