Santa Anita: Ultra unlucky mare

Ultra Blend had a tough trip in Saturday's $300,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff, with a wide rally that came up a half-length short of success.

Ridden by Joel Rosario, Ultra Blend, the 3-1 third choice, was last of nine on the final turn. Rosario guided her four-wide in early stretch and still trailed then leader Amazing by 3 1-2 lengths with a furlong remaining. Through the last 150 yards, Ultra Blend was catching the eye, but she could only finish third, a nose behind runner-up Amazing, who was a half-length behind race winner Evening Jewel.

The trips of Evening Jewel and Ultra Blend are worth noting. The track has played very friendly to frontrunners since opening day on Dec. 26, but these fillies and mares seemed to defy that, with Evening Jewel closing from seventh.
