Santa Anita: Two claims in first

Via Verde, the winner of Saturday's first race, was claimed for $20,000 by trainer Gus Headley.

Ridden by leading rider Joel Rosario, Via Verde ran six furlongs in 1:09.22, running down pacesetter Western Smoke in the final furlong to win by 1 1-4 lengths. Via Verde, trained by John Sadler, won a $16,000 claimer at Hollywood Park in November but had been winless in his first two starts at this meeting.

Bertran Hill, who finished third, was claimed by Vladimir Cerin. Bertan Hill is winless in his last seven starts. He was claimed by previous trainer Hector Palma for $16,000 here in January, and had finished fourth and third in two starts for Palma before Saturday's race.
