Santa Anita: Track record!

The Factor ($4.80) ran six furlongs in 1:06.98  in Sunday's fourth race, setting a dirt track record at Santa Anita.

The previous mark of 1:07.20 was held by Sunny Blossom in 1989.

The Factor, ridden by Rafael Bejarano, led throughout a maiden race for 2-year-olds, setting fractions of 21.62 and 44.11 seconds, winning by 8 1-4 lengths over Houston Harbor. Cook Inlet, a first-time starter, finished third after a poor start.

The Factor made his second start, having finished fourth as the 7-10 favorite in his debut at Hollywood Park on Nov. 28. He races for a partnership and trainer Bob Baffert.

The final time was not the fastest six furlongs in track history. During the three-year synthetic track era that ended earlier this year, Bob Black Jack ran six furlongs in 1:06.53 in the 2008 Sunshine Millions Dash. With the installation of a sand-and-clay track here in November, the track is recognizing the old dirt track times as the records to beat.
