Santa Anita: The track is fast

Santa Anita's main track was listed as "good" for the first race, but was fast for the next two.

In the first race, a field of $8,000 claimers, the lowest level, ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:43.94. In the second race, a field of maiden $30,000 claimers zipped six furlongs in 1:09.67. In the third race, a starter allowance over a mile, the final time was 1:36.25, a quick time for that sort of field.

This is the first day of use for the newly-installed sand-and-clay track, which was completed in November. The new surface replaces a synthetic track that drained poorly in heavy rains over a three-year span.

The track is no longer reflecting time records from that period. Sunday's program lists the track records from the conventional dirt surface that was in place before the synthetic era.
