Santa Anita: Tough trip for 'Top'

Email

Turning Top was terribly unlucky to be second in Saturday's Santa Ana Stakes.

Sent off as the 9-5 favorite, Turning Top was well-placed in third on the final turn when she slipped noticeably under jockey Joel Rosario and bobbled. Turning Top dropped back to fourth in early stretch but closed well in the final furlong to finish a length behind race winner Malibu Pier, who won her first stakes in the Santa Ana.

Malibu Pier's victory deserves commendation. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, she dueled with Lilly Fa Pootz through early fractions of 23.28 and 46.53 seconds, dropped back by 1 1-2 lengths behind Lilly Fa Pootz at the end of the backstretch, and then rallied on the outside of the pacesetter to take the lead before the eighth pole.

Trained by Carla Gaines, Malibu Pier won her first stakes in the Santa Ana, her eighth start.
