Santa Anita: Then there were 4 (runners)

Email

There were eight entrants for Thursday's eighth race, but only four horses started.

Imperatriz, the 8-5 favorite on the morning-line, was scratched because of unsoundness, while Lucky Sis (9-5) and Mystery Bird (5-1) were withdrawn because of illness. So, five horses were saddled, but Fire and Spice, a 7-1 shot with approximately four minutes to post, was withdrawn because he did not warm up well, according to track officials.

Tiz o' Gold ($3) won the one-mile race for $12,500 claimers who had never won twice, outfinishing Social Event after a decent stretch duel. (Honest!). Tiz o' Gold was timed in 1:38.53 and was ridden by Joe Talamo, winning by 1 1-4 lengths. Derby Memo finished third, followed by Warren's Whisper.

As a result of the late scratch, the $1 super high five was refunded since there was no longer five horses in the field. At the time of Fire and Spice's withdrawal, there was approximately $34,000 in the super high five pool.
