Santa Anita: Tamerin keeps going

Speed remains ultra-dangerous in two-turn races at Santa Anita.

In Sunday's sixth race, Tamerin ($11.60) set a quick pace of 22.91 and 46.91 seconds in a field of $10,500 to $12,500 claimers and maintained her advantage through the second half of the one-mile race to win by a half-length over Malusita in 1:37.91.

Tamerin was ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, his second winner on Sunday's program.

Tamerin, 6, has made just 13 starts, and has four wins. She ran in sprints previously and was making her first start over a mile. The win ended a seven-race losing streak, dating back to a $50,000 claimer on the hillside turf course here in October 2009.

Since the meeting began on Dec. 26, pace has been a major asset in two turn races on the sand-and-clay track, which was installed in November and early December.
