Santa Anita: Stubborn 'Freighter' wins

Email

Liberian Freighter held up the start of Saturday's $150,000 Arcadia Stakes for a few minutes when he balked several times before going on to the turf course.

Once he finally made it to the gate, Liberian Frieghter ($20.40), who was ridden by Martin Garcia, won his third stakes in the last year in the one-mile turf race, leading throughout and winning by a half-length over a hard-charging Blue Chagall, an 11-1 shot. Liberian Freighter was timed in 1:34.41.

Jeranimo made a late run to finish third, followed by Norvsky. Caracortado was sent off as the 4-5 favorite and finished fifth in the field of seven. He was in traffic on the final turn and once clear did not show the same rally that he displayed when second to Fluke in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile last month.

Liberian Freighter was eight in the Kilroe, setting the pace before fading in the final furlong.
