Santa Anita: Southern Fireball roars back

Southern Fireball returned from a layoff of nearly eight months to win an allowance race on the hillside turf course in Sunday's second race.

Trained by Doug O'Neill, Southern Fireball ($13.80) was near the lead throughout and won by a half-length over even-money favorite Elusive Galaxy, finishing about 6 1-2 furlongs on turf in 1:12.92.

Elusive Galaxy had every chance of catching Southern Fireball in the stretch, but could not close the margin.

Southern Fireball has won 2 of 5 starts. She won a maiden race at Hollywood Park last May, and was unplaced in two stakes for 2-year-old fillies on synthetic tracks, finishing fourth in the Cinderella Stakes at Hollywood Park and last of eight in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar last August.
