Santa Anita: Skellytown wins opener


Skellytown, third in the San Juan Capistrano Handicap in 2009, but racing in low level claiming races for the last six months, won the first race on opening day on Sunday.

He had little room to spare. Skellytown ($11.60) emerged between horsese to hold off a late threat fromm 28-1 Egypt, who was a nose in front of 8-5 favorite Capture the Call at the wire. Streets of Heaven finished fourth, a head behind Capture the Call in the field of nine $8,000 claimers.

Skellytown ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:43.94 for trainer Robertino Diodoro and jockey Victor Espinoza. The pace of the race was slow, with early fractions of 25.06 and 49.94 seconds. Skellytown was third early, racing on the rail to early stretch when Espinoza moved him two-wide to rally past Capture the Call.
