Santa Anita: Silk Street's win could be foreshadowing

Silk Street ($15) won a maiden race over about 6 1-2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in Sunday's sixth race and trainer Simon Callaghan was no where near Santa Anita. He is stuck in England, where he attended a 2-year-olds in-training sale last week and was unable to fly back to California after a volcano in Iceland scattered ash across northern Europe, grounding flights.

Silk Street is the second of Callaghan's three starters on Sunday. His 3-year-old filly Conniption was second in her U.S. debut in the second race.

In the final race, Callaghan starts Falcon Rock in the $150,000 San Juan Capistrano Handicap over about 1 3-4 miles on turf. Falcon Rock won his debut in the United States in an optional claimer over 1 1-2 miles on turf on March 6, leaving Callaghan confident that the 4-year-old can be effective in the San Juan.

Reached in England on Friday, Callaghan said that he though Falcon Rock could beat heavy favorite Bourbon Bay. "He ran very well and has improved from that race," he said.

The San Juan is the final race of the meeting, the day's 10th race.
