Santa Anita: Sidney wins the SA Derby, but...

Sidney's Candy set a slow pace and pulled clear through the stretch to score a comprehensive win in Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Derby, but many eyes were watching eventual third-place finisher Lookin at Lucky who had a rough trip on the turn of the key Kentucky Derby prep.

Lookin at Lucky, the champion 2-year-old colt of 2009 and the 3-5 favorite in the Santa Anita Derby, was racing a few lengths behind Sidney's Candy on the turn when jockey Garrett Gomez was forced to check Lookin at Lucky when the colt was crowded by 23-1 outsider Who's Up. Lookin at Lucky dropped back to eighth but Gomez was able to weave his mount through traffic to finish six lengths behind Sidney's Candy.

Setsuko closed well through the stretch to finish second, 4 1-2 lengths behind the winner. He earned $150,000, and has $180,000 in graded stakes earnings. It will take a few weeks of additional Kentucky Derby preps throughout the nation to determine whether Setsuko has sufficient graded stakes earnings to gain a place in the Kentucky Derby. He certainly appears to be a colt that will run well in longer races, where ever he surfaces.

The Santa Anita Derby was the first leg of a pick six that began with a carryover of more than $98,000. Bettors added $972,272 to the pool. Sidney's Candy ($9.60) was the second choice in the field of 10.
