Santa Anita: Seconds for Flores

In consecutive races, on horses with vastly different chances, David Flores could only finish second in the fourth and fifth races at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Flores rode 2-5 favorite Turbulent Descent to a second in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes. Previously unbeaten in three starts, Turbulent Descent was well-positioned in early stretch but could not catch Zazu, who saved ground in the final quarter-mile to win by 1 1-4 lengths. Zazu ($10) had finished behind Turbulent Descent in two stakes at Hollywood Park in the fall.

In the fifth race, Flores rode Caged Mistress, a 51-1 outsider, to a surprise second in a $40,000 claimer over about 6 1-2 furlongs on the hillside turf course. Caged Mistress emerged from the pack to finish behind Separate Forest ($5.40), who pulled clear late to win by 4 1-4 lengths.

Flores has one more mount on Saturday, Lodi Red, a 6-1 chance on the morning-line, in the 10th race.
