Santa Anita: River Glow bobbles, wins

River Glow overcame an awkward start to set the pace and hold off 13-1 Ultra Awesome to win Sunday's fifth race.

River Glow ($9.60) was ridden by Brice Blanc, and won the $20,000 claimer over 6 1-2 furlongs by a head in 1:15.44. Breaking from the rail, River Glow bobbled slightly at the start, but quickly moved past seven rivals to take the lead. An 8-year-old mare, she set fractions of 21.95 and 44.55 seconds and won for the first time since an allowance race in March 2008. Fairway Road, the 3-2 favorite, finished fifth.

Trained by Ted H. West, River Glow was third in a $20,000 claimer on Jan. 1, her only previous start at the meeting.

Half of the field was claimed. Ultra Awesome was claimed by Carl O'Callaghan; third-place finisher See N Win was taken by Bill Spawr; She's Very Rare, who was fourth, was claimed in a two-way shake by Mike Mitchell, and Fairway Road was claimed in a three-way shake by Julio Canani.
