Santa Anita: Reyes finally wins

Christian Santiago Reyes, the Eclipse Award-winning apprentice jockey of 2009, won his first race of the Santa Anita meeting with his 30th mount, Skellytown ($21.80) in Monday's third race.

Reyes, 21, began riding in mid-January of this meeting, after serving more than 60 days of suspension from late September to early January. He has struggled to gain mounts in recent weeks after the lengthy absence. Reyes was repeatedly sanctioned for riding infractions last spring and summer at Hollywood Park and Del Mar.

In Monday's third race, Reyes guided Skellytown to the lead in the final sixteenth of the $10,500 to $12,500 claimer over 1 1-8 miles to win by a half-length over My Man Sumo. Skellytown was timed in 1:49.37. No Dream, the 7-5 favorite, was pulled up on the backstretch with an injury to the tendon of his left foreleg, according to track stewards.

In Monday's third race, the second through fourth-place finishers - My Man Sumo, Royal Import and Saravas Wild Again - were claimed. My Man Sumo was claimed by Mike Mitchell, Royal Import was taken by Tim Yakteen in a three-way shake, and Saravas Wild Again was claimed by Victor Garcia in a two-way shake.
