Santa Anita: Rafael and the rail

Leading jockey Rafael Bejarano rode Spectacular Slew ($3.80) to a victory in Thursday's third race, hugging the rail and waiting for room in early stretch before winning the six-furlong race for $25,000 claimers by a half-length over Ribald.

Typical of the main track in recent weeks, Spectacular Slew was timed in a quick 1:08.74.

Bejarano rode Spectacular Slew for Bob Baffert, who leads the trainer's standings. Bejarano and Baffert have won 9 of 17 races when they've teamed together at this meeting. They do not team together on any more races on Thursday.

Spectacular Slew won the first leg of a pick six that drew a pool of $143,798. By comparison, the pick six pool on Thursday, Jan. 6 was $139,711.
