Santa Anita: PVal wins opener

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela, who had four winners on Saturday, began Sunday's card with a frontrunning win aboard Brayden Buddy ($7.60).

Trained by Vladimir Cerin, Brayden Buddy led throughout the maiden claimer over 5 1-2 furlongs, winning by 3 1-2 lengths over El Gran Matador, a 4-1 shot. Sunday's first race was Brayden's Buddy's first start since March 2010.

Valenzuela, currently third in the standings behind Joel Rosario and Rafael Bejarano, rides the first eight races on Sunday's nine-race program. He is expected to win the fifth race, the Santa Lucia Stakes, on the Cerin-trained Briecat, the 6-5 favorite on the morning-line.
