Santa Anita: Preamble extends streak

Preamble extended his winning streak to 3 races with a two-length win in an allowance race over 1 1-16 miles in Thursday's seventh race.

The 4-year-old colt did so despite appearing to lose his momentum briefly in the stretch when he reached the front. Ridden by Martin Garcia, Preamble stalked pacesetter Lucky Primo before taking the lead. Garcia roused Preamble when he felt the colt pause and got a quick response.

"It looked like he just stopped," Garcia said. "He took off again. He's a really nice horse."

Preamble ($7.60) ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:41.98. Trained by Richard Mandella for Spendthrift Farm, Preamble has won 3 of 5 starts. He was fourth and sixth in two starts last year before being given a rest. This year, Preamble is unbeaten in three starts.

Lucky Primo, the winner of the 2008 Califonria Cup Juvenile, finished second, a neck in front of Uh Oh Bango in the field of five. Uh Oh Bango was sent off as the 3-2 favorite.
