Santa Anita: O'Neill sweeps state stakes

Trainer Doug O'Neill completed a sweep of the stakes for 2-year-old statebreds on opening week when California Nectar ($10.80) won her first stakes in Monday's California Breeders' Champion Stakes for fillies.

She had an ideal trip under jockey Patrick Valenzuela, stalking pacesetter, and 4-5 favorite, Teddy's Promise, through early fractions of 22.28 and 44.50 seconds, took the lead in early stretch and won by 1 1-2 lengths over Warren's Flyer. Bathing Beauty, a 23-1 outsider, finished third, with Teddy's Promise fading to finish fourth.

California Nectar, who races for breeder Pablo Suarez, was making her third straight start in a stakes, having finished second by a nose in the California Cup Juvenile Fillies on a synthetic track at Hollywood Park on Oct. 30 and fourth in the Grade 3 Miesque Stakes on turf there on Nov. 28. Monday's race was on a conventional dirt surface, showing her versatility.
