Santa Anita: Mitchell, Talamo double

Email

Trainer Mike Mitchell and jockey Joe Talamo won for the second time on Thursday in the seventh race when Diamond Geezah prevailed by a nose over the English import Easy Ticket.

Diamond Geezah ($10.60) is co-owned by Dan Capen and sports talk show host Jim Rome, who races as Jungle Racing. Rome attended Thursday's race.

Diamond Geezah, third in his U.S. debut on Jan. 13, raced with blinkers for the first time on Thursday. Talamo had Diamond Geezah in third on the hillside, stalking the pace of Tale of Lucknfame, who set an early pace of 21.77 and 45.09 seconds.

Talamo kept Diamond Geezah inside through the crossing and in early stretch of the oval and held off Easy Ticket to win by a bob of noses. Easy Ticket finished 2 1-4 lengths in front of Metropolitan Man in the field of 3-year-olds. Easy Ticket lugged in through the stretch, which had to cost the two-time winner momentum.

In Thursday's first race, Mitchell and Talamo teamed to win an optional claimer for fillies and mares on the hillside turf course with Talktoomuch ($8.60).
