Santa Anita: Medallion still learning

Email

Silver Medallion gave trainer Steve Asmussen his first career win at Santa Anita in Friday's Eddie Logan Stakes, a colt likely to stay on turf in coming months.

Silver Medallion ($12.60) stalked pacesetter Robie the Cat, took the lead in early stretch and held off Ten Devils to win by a half-length. Robie the Cat and Ten Devils were an entry that was sent off as the 4-5 favorites.

Silver Medallion has been known to play up in the mornings during training, leaving jockey Garrett Gomez and assistant trainer Scott Blasi anxious to see how he develops in coming months. The colt has won 2 of 5 starts. He beat maidens in his debut at Saratoga back in August when trained by Chad Brown and made his first start for Asmussen in Friday's race.

Asmussen has a 30-horse stable at Santa Anita this winter. Silver Medallion was his sixth starter of the meet, which began on Sunday.
