Santa Anita: Magic Lantern encounters trouble

Making his U.S. debut, Magic Lantern ran a game third in Friday's third race, losing by 3 1-2 lengths to the first-time starter Timezone ($8.80).

Jockey Michael Baze guided Magic Lantern to the inside through the stretch, but found tight quarters and could do no better than third. Timezone, ridden by leading jockey Rafael Bejarano, swept to the front with a wide move and won by 1 3-4 lengths over the second-time starter So Nice.

Magic Lantern was winless in six starts in England last year, including a start in a $401,600 sales stakes. Now trained by Jamie Lloyd, Magic Lantern was second in two starts in that country. He could resurface in a maiden race over six furlongs at the upcoming Hollywood Park spring-summer meeting.

Timezone is trained by Richard Mandella for breeders Claiborne Farms. Timezone ran about 6 1-2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:14.08.
